More and more people use mobile devices to access online content, so the demand for mobile-friendly websites is constantly growing. To meet this demand, the organization that controls the universal domain name extensions, ICANN, introduced the .MOBI domain name extension in 2005. The first registrations were allowed in September 2006, and the intention behind this domain name extension is that all websites that use it are required to comply with special restrictions. In other words, all .MOBI websites must be developed to be accessed without problems by mobile devices in accordance with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” created by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in cooperation with the dot MOBI Registry organization. These incorporate how a website is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), etc.

The requirements have induced some concerns taking into account that the top-level domain is the only one that specifies what devices has to be able to open a website and the way in which this has to happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a website should be built in such a way as to be accessed by most web browser applications and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
